Author Plus

Author Plus enables you to create interactive activities for your students and to run them on a network or on stand alone computers. The program includes a range of exercise types including:

All the above exercises can be created quickly and easily, and all can be enhanced by feedback, hints, graphics, sound files and summary screens. You may decide to create a single exercise to consolidate a language area tackled in class or you might create banks of activities for self access use. You can group activities together into courses and units to provide clear and coherent paths for students to follow. The optional Results Manager enables you to track student activity and to diagnose students' weak areas: useful information for revision planning.

Author Plus and Author Plus-based programs are used in thousands of schools around the world. Author Plus has also been chosen by a range of publishers to create commercially available products. Cambridge University Press used Author Plus to create the Bonus Extra CD-ROM for English Grammar in Use; Clarity's Tense Buster and Study Skills Success are Author Plus-based; Richmond Publishing developed the Freeform CD-ROM using Author Plus. The program is ideal for language teaching, but can also be used for other subjects from History and Science to Music.

Exercise Generator

Exercise Generator is a timesaving tool that enables teachers to create and print out paper-based worksheets in minutes. The program includes a bank of texts and activities on topics as diverse as orang-utan rehabilitation, Harry Potter, the Jaipur leg and the Museum of the Moving Image. These texts are at five levels of ability from Elementary to Advanced, represent a variety of text-types, and are differentiated by sentence length, grammatical structure and vocabulary. The great strength of Exercise Generator is that it additionally allows teachers to input their own texts which are then quickly and easily turned into neatly laid-out activities. The program includes nine different exercise types, including gapfill, jumbled words, wordsearch, proof reading and sentence matching. Use of this range of activity types "is excellent for coursework preparation or detailed study of a text." Altering the source text enables teachers to create differentiated worksheets for a mixed ability class. The program allows teachers to archive their worksheets for future use with titles describing their content and intended use. This makes it easy for department members to collaborate in building up a bank of activities. Exercise Generator was originally developed with Oxford University Press and was recently officially adopted by the Ministry of Education in Malaysia for 800 schools. "The teachers were grateful for Exercise Generator," reported a Malaysian trainer. "How their eyes sparkled at the end of the session!" Exercise Generator is available for English at five levels, or in a multi-language version including English, French, German and Spanish.

MindGame / MindLines

For copyright reasons, MindGame is called MindLines in the US. MindGame is a virtual boardgame which combines language learning with strategy. Students can play against each other or against the computer: the object of the game is to capture all your opponent's pieces and make them your own. To capture each piece you have to answer a language question. Each session has a different theme, ranging from familiar vocabulary and grammar areas such as irregular simple past forms, to homophones, anagrams and chatroom slang. As students capture, lose and recapture squares, questions are repeated, and this is remarkably effective in helping students to learn the language items and become more confident. The independent Schoolzone evaluation found that a "real strength of this product is the ability to add your own category to reflect the work you want pupils to revise. This authoring program is intuitive and easy to use," and gives you a much greater control over the language areas you choose to make available to your learners. MindGame includes a range of different interfaces and a variety of options for students to choose from. They can adjust the skill of the computer from beginner to expert, switch a game from learn to test mode and call up reports on their performance including details of which words they have got right or wrong. Above all though, MindGame is a fun and effective way of helping students to learn discrete language items. You can choose between British or American English on installation. MindGame has been officially adopted by The British Council for use in all 227 centres worldwide.

Reactions!

Reactions! is an integrated skills course with a focus on reading. The program comes at five levels, from Elementary to Advanced, and helps students develop a range of reading and vocabulary strategies. These include prediction, identifying your reason for reading, skimming, scanning, dictionary work, guessing or ignoring unknown words and developing the reading habit.

Reactions! is organised around a wide variety of text types including articles, broadcasts, quizzes, letters, recipes, stories, newsletters and advertisements. All units develop from reading into a range of skills activities which include discussion, listening comprehension and writing.

Reactions! includes extensive listening resources enabling students to listen to texts and develop their "chunking" skills. The audio component is in a range of accents including British, North American and Australasian.

Many of the units integrate authentic websites into tasks and so introduce learners into a native speaker English environment. Topics range from the serious to the light-hearted, and the program is both thought-provoking and lots of fun!

Results Manager

Results Manager enables teachers and administrators to see exactly what their students have done, when they did it, and how much time they spent. The software comes in two versions which integrate with (1) Clarity's Windows programs and (2) Clarity's online programs. Results Manager provides the following three main functions.

1. Student management

You can organise your students into groups and subgroups (eg year groups and classes) so that you can see the performance of a whole class in a single report. You can also paste in or import groups of students to save data entry time.

2. Login options

Results Manager allows you to decide which students can use the program (making sure you get the best use of your licences) and how they log in, for example whether they need to enter a password. When students forget their password, you can retrieve it!

3. Reports

The central function of Results Manager is to provide reports on student activity. You can generate three main types of report (all with a number of variations):

  1. Student reports focus on student performance
  2. Group reports focus on the performance of all the students within a group, additionally providing summaries and averages
  3. Content reports display the performance of all students who have attempted the exercises or units specified.

This version of Results Manager, launched in 2004, is a single program that works with all the Clarity Windows programs you have on your system. It is much easier to use than the previous version and provides an invaluable insight into the progress your students are making through Tense Buster and Study Skills Success, as well as the exercises you have created in Author Plus for Windows.

Tense Buster

This program provides systematic presentation and practice of 33 key grammar points at five levels. Now with more listening activities, random grammar tests, a video-based pronunciation section, weblinks and download - and much more! focuses on helping students improve their understanding of 33 key grammar areas ranging from some/any at Elementary Level to phrasal verbs at Advanced Level. Each unit begins with a presentation of a grammar topic based on a dialogue, a newspaper article, a radio broadcast or an extract from a story. In this introductory phase, learners are encouraged to form theories about how the grammar works. Next come concept checking questions focusing on key areas of difficulty, and a grammar rule which enables learners to confirm or correct their theories. Students move on to practice and testing activities in which the language is contextualised and key aspects of form and function are highlighted. They might, for example, find and correct errors in a text about McDonald's or examine the use of modals in an authentic report about a robbery in Nigeria. Finally, each unit includes a vocabulary session and ends by suggesting extension activities. The British Council's Network News describes Tense Buster as "very popular with students, attractive and easy to use", and Schoolzone found "the activities [to be] interesting, varied and just the right length to sustain interest." Most activities include an audio function giving additional listening practice and have vocabulary support. All activities include detailed feedback, one of the most popular features of the program. Tense Buster has been officially adopted worldwide by The British Council and by Ministries of Education in several countries including Spain, Canada and the UAE. The software is authorable, and comes with an optional Results Manager enabling you to track student activity. Choose between British or American English on installation.
